| Plants
- where would we be without them? |
|
From the earliest age, man has been
gathering the leaves, berries and roots of plants for food. He has
used plants to make sick people feel better and used the juices and pulp
of plants to heal wounds. |
|
|
He has studied and observed the precious
resources of plants and then in his wisdom, handed down his discoveries to
others through time. Medieval manuscripts contain references to
making scented oils, infusions, aromatic waters, infused oils, herbal
sachets and it has been learned that until relatively recently, French
doctors ordered the burning of the herbs Thyme and Rosemary in the
hospital wards as a form of fumigation. |
|
|
Essential Oils are balancing in their
effects, a little like the Chinese idea of Yin and Yang - opposing forces
which exist in a state of dynamic balance. |
|
| Nature's
Fragrances |
|
Essential Oils are readily absorbed through the skin
and whenever the oils are used in massage, baths, compresses and skin
preparations, an amount of the volatile essence is inhaled having a direct
effect on the on the mind and body. |
|
|
You can create beautiful fragrances, something
special and in tune with your soul. Pleasant odours evoke happy
memories, like a trip to Grandma who always smelled of pears soap and
lavender. |
|
| The
"Joys" of Aromatherapy |
|
Aromatherapy should be slotted in when describing
"joys". The joy of eating, tasting, listening to uplifting
music, being moved by a breathtaking landscape and even falling in love. |
|
|
It is advised that any one considering the use of Essential
Oils should first consult someone with training as, if used
incorrectly, Essential Oils, even small amounts, can build up to toxic
levels in the body over a period of time. Having said this, once
armed with knowledge, the wonderful and fragrant changes you can make to
your environment are many. |

 |

The
Picture of Dorian Gray |
|
|
"He would now
study perfumes and the secrets of their manufacture, distilling heavily
scented gums from the East. |
|
|
He saw that
there was no mood of the mind that had not it's counterpart in the
sensuous life, and set himself the task to discover their true relation,
wondering what there was in frankincense that made one mystical, and in
ambergris that stirred one's passions, |
|
|
and violets that
woke the memory of dead romance, and in musk that troubled the brain,
and champak that strained the imagination; |
|
|
and
seeking often to estimate the several influences of sweet smelling
roots, and scented pollen - laden flowers or aromatic balms." |

Versatile
Lavender |
|
|
Lavender
is undoubtedly the most popular of all the Essential Oil
family.
It's spread of properties ranges from antiseptic, sedative, analgesic,
insect repelling and soothing but most of all, balancing and calming. |
|
|
For
thousands of years, man has used the fresh or dried flowers of Lavender
and it has never lost it's popularity. |
|
|
Massaged
into the temples, Lavender
has been proved to relieve some forms of
headache, or if this alone does not relieve, then a soothing compress of
Lavender can be placed
on the back of the neck or on the forehead. |
|
|
People
who are often anxious or depressed may benefit from a nightly bath, with
Lavender
added. |
|
|
A few drops of Lavender
on a pillow case, hanky, nighty or sheet often helps to slow down the
over - active brain at night. |
|
|
A useful tip for the coming Summer months.
One drop of Lavender
on a cotton bud makes an effective swab for the bites and stings of
those nasty mosquitoes.
Here is a soothing recipe for the over active
body.
Add 2 drops Orange,
4 drops Marjoram
and 2 drops Lavender
to a warm bath, agitate to disperse the Essential
Oils and soak for a good ten minutes.
