Evening Primrose Oil

(Oenothera biennis)

Description...

Evening primrose oil has been ranked as one of the most important supplements of the century. It is recommend for a large range of ailments including arthritis and premenstrual syndrome. However it is helpful for nearly every organ in the body.

It comes from the seeds of the yellow primrose and it contains an essential fatty acid known as Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). This fatty acid is responsible for most of the supplement’s benefits. GLA is made by the body into a substance called prostaglandins. These are hormone type compounds and are used by our body regularly and must be replaced regularly. GLA is affected by our western lifestyle and diet.

When our body's supply of essential fatty acids such as GLA is deficient, the effects of premenstrual syndrome, diabetes, and other disorders may become more evident.

Evening primrose oil may also be useful in treating sore breasts in nursing mothers, through its anti-inflammatory action. It may also have an anti-clotting action.
