Wrinkles

Wrinkles
are natures way of telling us we are getting older and with today's rushed lifestyle, poorer eating habits and stress, our skin can be abused without us even knowing.

The skin is a living, breathing organ which needs to be nourished.  The skin is the part of our body that is continually exposed to all elements and is the most susceptible to damage.

The skin functions in protecting the body against injuries and infection; assists elimination of wastes; regulates our internal temperature; helps prevent dehydration; is a reservoir for water and food; manufactures vitamin D when exposed to sunlight and is a sense organ to the body.

There are essentially two layers to the skin;

  • The epidermis or outer layer, has a surface of dead cells.  It is continually shed as new skin grows from active cells underneath.  This is why cuts and wounds heal fairly rapidly when new tissue completely replaces the old cells.

  • The internal layer of skin is called the dermis.  It is composed of tough, elastic connective tissue with a network of blood vessels and nerves.  This layer also contains the follicles from which the hairs grow, plus the sweat and oil (sebaceous) glands.

  • Deeper is the subcutaneous tissue, which contains a more dense structure of blood vessels and nerves.

Our skin plays several very important roles.  Protection against drying out and invasion from bacterial and viral infections.  It helps in regulation of body temperature and allows us to sense many things like hot, cold or pain sensations through many nerve endings in our skin.

Nature's repair processes are slow and steady with our cells constantly renewed.

This renewal of cells happens at a much faster rate in the young and begins to slow down as we age.

Slower cell renewal means that the skin becomes drier and dead skin cells are shed more slowly, and as the skin loses it's youthful bloom, wrinkles start to appear.

Ways to help keep your skin at it's healthy best are:

  • Drink sufficient water to flush out toxins and hydrate the skin.

  • Cut out or drastically reduce junk food and fat intake.

  • Cut down on stimulants such as alcohol, coffee and extremely spicy foods as these can do the skin harm.

  • Limit sun exposure and if out for extended periods, then make wearing a hat, protective clothing and a high sun protection factor sunscreen your priority.

  • Cut out smoking.

  • Cut down on chocolates and refined sugar-laden foods.
