| Usage |
|
Docusate is a stool softener or emollient laxative. It is a surfactant which is considered to act by stimulating intestinal secretions and by increasing the penetration of fluid into the faeces, thereby softening the stool. |

| Dosage |
|
Dosage for Adults: Take two or three tablets twice daily. For infants and young children Coloxyl Drops are preferred. |

| Warning |
|
This medication should not be used in patients with abdominal cramps, colic, nausea, vomiting or other symptoms of appendicitis; undiagnosed rectal bleeding, intestinal obstruction; abdominal pain of unknown cause or previous allergy to stool softener laxatives. Prolonged use of any laxative is undesirable and may lead to dependence. Patients should be advised to drink plenty of water and increase the fibre in the diet and to consult their doctor if constipation persists. |
